Leonardo was not only a painter and drawer but also a sculptor, architect, inventor, military engineer, mathematician, and musician. Growing up Leonardo received very little education after the basic reading, writing and mathematics but showed such talent at an early age. At the age of 14 Leonardo began an apprenticeship with artist Andrea del Verrocchio where he learned carpentry, metalwork, leather arts, drawing, sculpting and painting. Verrocchio and Leonardo worked together on the painting The Baptism of Christ. His work impressed Verrocchio and also showed his talents and ingenuity when he created a new technique of oil paint. Leonardo was looked at as one of the 'greatest philosophers' and became the center of a movement of artists that permanently influenced western culture.
